Asian Gold Gains as Treasury Yields Decline Ahead of Federal Reserve Minutes

    August 19, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – Gold experienced a slight increase during Asian trading on Wednesday, following a decline in U.S. Treasury yields from recent peaks. Spot gold climbed 0.2% to $4,342.33 an ounce at 0030 GMT, rebounding after nearly a 2% drop on Tuesday. Meanwhile, December U.S. gold futures decreased by 0.6% to $4,396.30 an ounce. This upward movement kept the focus on interest-rate expectations in bullion markets. The Federal Reserve has scheduled the release of minutes from its July policy meeting at 1800 GMT on Wednesday.

Gold rises as Treasury yields ease before Fed minutes
Gold markets track Treasury yields and Federal Reserve rate expectations.

Gold had retreated on Tuesday after two consecutive days of gains. The spot price fell 1.1% to $4,364.90 an ounce by 1733 GMT, while December futures closed 1.2% lower at $4,420.60. A global bond selloff pushed long-term borrowing costs in several major economies to levels unseen in decades. The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.3371% on Tuesday, marking its highest point in nearly 20 years, before easing to approximately 5.28% during Asian trading on Wednesday.

Market expectations for a September rate hike continued to diminish. Data from CME FedWatch indicated a 65% chance that policymakers would leave rates unchanged next month, with traders assigning a 35% probability of a quarter-point increase. Lower anticipated interest rates tend to support gold since bullion does not generate interest income. Recent U.S. economic indicators also showed unexpected job losses, subdued inflation, and weaker retail spending in July, all of which reduced the market’s expectations for an immediate rate hike.

Fed Minutes Bring Focus to Policy Disagreements

Federal Reserve maintained its federal funds target range at 3.50% to 3.75% on July 29, with the Federal Open Market Committee approving the decision by a 9-3 vote. Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari, and Lorie Logan favored a quarter-point increase. The committee noted that economic activity was expanding at a robust rate despite significant uncertainty and highlighted that inflation remained above its 2% target, partly due to supply shocks that increased prices in sectors such as energy. Employment gains kept pace with the workforce, while unemployment showed little change.

These internal disagreements brought extra attention to the July meeting minutes. Chairman Kevin Warsh presided over his second policy gathering as Fed chair. The July statement reaffirmed that the central bank would continue to maintain ample reserves in the banking system. The upcoming policy meeting is scheduled from Sept. 15 to Sept. 16, during which officials will again determine the target range after evaluating economic and financial conditions within the central bank’s monetary policy framework.

Bond Yields Continue to Influence Gold Trading

Treasury yields remain a pivotal factor affecting precious metals following Tuesday’s notable movement. Rising yields increase the opportunity cost of holding gold, which does not provide interest income. Oil prices also stayed elevated, adding another inflation-sensitive element to market dynamics. Early Wednesday saw mixed trading among other precious metals: spot silver declined 0.5% to $62.99 an ounce, platinum increased 0.3% to $1,717.03, and palladium fell 0.3% to $1,286.73, reflecting the overall uneven trend across the precious-metals complex.

Gold’s performance on Wednesday followed a volatile August after a relatively steady July. According to the World Gold Council, global gold exchange-traded funds saw net inflows of $3 billion during July. Total holdings grew by 23 metric tons to 4,068 tons, while assets under management increased by 1% to $530 billion. The early Wednesday rebound only partially recovered from Tuesday’s decline. Market measures such as rate expectations, Treasury yields, and U.S. monetary policy continued to be central to the gold trading landscape.
