Belgium Maintains Level 2 Status in U.S. Travel Advisory Update

    August 6, 2026

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The U.S. State Department has kept Belgium at Level 2 in its latest travel warning, citing concerns over crime, terrorism, and civil unrest. Issued on July 23, the advisory continues to recommend heightened caution without escalating the overall threat level. While new risks related to crime and unrest have been added, the alert remains at the same level. This guidance pertains to American travelers visiting Brussels, other Belgian cities, and popular tourist destinations nationwide.

US keeps Belgium at Level 2 in updated travel advisory
Belgium travelers should stay alert in tourist areas and transport hubs.

The updated advisory emphasizes increased vigilance against thefts in crowded areas and on transport systems. Pickpocketing incidents are common near railway stations, metro platforms, restaurants, airports, and busy tourist zones. Travelers may also be at risk of purse snatching, stolen mobile devices, or theft from parked vehicles. It advises keeping passports, cash, and electronics securely stored when navigating public spaces and to avoid leaving valuables unattended, including luggage.

Special attention is given to rail travel, as thieves often target bags stored above seats or near train exits. Reports have pointed to thefts on routes connecting Brussels and Amsterdam. Criminal groups may operate in teams, employing distractions to steal wallets, phones, or small luggage items. The Belgian Federal Police recommend keeping valuables close and watching them carefully during station stops. Travelers should remain vigilant when boarding or disembarking trains and moving through crowded terminals.

Transport hubs and tourist areas require increased caution

The section on terrorism highlights that crowded public events, hotels, eateries, shopping districts, and places of worship are locations where extra vigilance is necessary. Schools, parks, transportation networks, and large-scale events are also flagged in the updated guidance. Belgium’s national threat level remains at Level 3 out of four. Authorities describe this as a serious threat level, used when a threat is considered possible and likely. Visitors are advised to follow security protocols and remain attentive to their surroundings.

Protests and strikes can also disrupt movement within Belgian cities, potentially blocking roads, delaying trains, or hindering local transit. Law enforcement may restrict access around demonstration sites and reroute traffic without prior notice. The advisory urges travelers to avoid demonstrations and stay informed through local updates before beginning any journey. When large-scale events or labor actions are scheduled, visitors should check public transportation updates accordingly.

Preparation, emergency contacts, and awareness remain key

Travel officials recommend registering with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program before or during visits. STEP provides security alerts and helps the U.S. Embassy in Brussels contact citizens in emergencies. It is also advised to review entry requirements, local regulations, and health guidelines before departure. Carrying copies of passports and travel documents can facilitate quicker assistance if items are lost or stolen. Trusted contacts and family members should also receive a copy of the travel itinerary.

For emergencies, Belgium’s contact number for police, fire, or medical assistance is 112, while the local police number is 101. Travelers should exercise caution near ticket machines, banks, and ATMs, particularly in crowded areas. The updated Belgium travel advisory does not recommend avoiding the country but emphasizes careful planning, protecting personal belongings, and adhering to official advice. The Level 2 designation remains active throughout the summer travel season.
