STARBASE, TEXAS / RankWire.AI / – SpaceX experienced a decline of 13.6% on August 5, closing at $108.27. This decrease followed the company’s initial quarterly report since its June IPO. Investors evaluated strong revenue growth against the backdrop of $18.37 billion in capital expenditures for the quarter. Notably, artificial intelligence infrastructure expenditures reached $15.83 billion, up from $749 million in the same period last year.

During trading, the stock dipped to as low as $107.18 and ultimately finished nearly 20% below its $135 IPO valuation. The company issued 638.9 million Class A shares via the offering, including the full underwriters’ option, resulting in approximately $85.68 billion in net proceeds. Trading on Nasdaq began on June 12, with the stock subsequently peaking at $201.80.
In the second quarter, SpaceX reported revenues of $7.81 billion, marking a 92% increase from $4.07 billion a year earlier. The firm reduced its net loss to $541 million from about $1.01 billion. Operating loss was cut down to $143 million from $970 million for the same period. Adjusted EBITDA reached $3.54 billion.
Rising expenses in AI development
The AI division generated $2.56 billion in quarterly revenue, an increase of 247.5% from $737 million. The growth was driven primarily by new AI services and infrastructure, which contributed $1.88 billion of the rise. Advertising revenue, however, declined by $59 million in this quarter. The division posted an operating loss of $1.26 billion as R&D costs grew 94.1%, reaching $2.18 billion.
Starlink along with other connectivity services continued to be SpaceX’s leading revenue generators. Sales from connectivity increased 65.8%, totaling $4.29 billion, while operating income improved by 79.4%, reaching $1.66 billion. Customer subscriber numbers grew by 101.2%, despite a 22.4% decrease in average revenue per user. Additional revenue growth was fueled by government, aviation, maritime, and enterprise sectors, adding another $939 million.
Significant share release post-IPO underway
Starting August 6, up to 911.5 million employee and early investor shares may be sold. This amount represents roughly 6.9% of SpaceX’s total 13.18 billion outstanding Class A and Class B shares, exceeding the shares sold during the IPO by about 272.6 million. The company detailed the phased release plan in its SEC filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
At the August 5 closing price, the first block of unlocked shares had an approximate notional value of $98.7 billion. As of July 28, SpaceX reported having 7.70 billion Class A shares and 5.49 billion Class B shares outstanding. By the end of June, the company held $93.52 billion in cash and $6.49 billion in marketable securities. The August 6 trading session will be the first opportunity for eligible holders to sell shares from the initial restricted group.
