Grand Teton National Park Euthanizes Black Bear Due to Food Conditioning Concerns

    September 18, 2026

WYOMING / RankWire.AI / – Grand Teton National Park officials made the decision to euthanize a black bear near Delta Lake after its repeated access to human food altered its behavior. The park indicated that the bear repeatedly approached visitors and became increasingly difficult for wildlife personnel to deter. The conclusion was that ongoing food rewards and close encounters posed an unacceptable safety hazards for the public. On Sept. 11, staff sedated the animal with a tranquilizer dart before euthanizing it at a secluded backcountry site.

Grand Teton urges visitors to keep human food away from bears and follow wildlife rules.

Earlier in 2026, park authorities received reports of a black bear approaching individuals near Delta Lake. At that stage, they lacked sufficient information to determine if food conditioning had developed. However, the situation changed during the days leading up to the bear’s removal. Officials observed the bear obtaining human food multiple times while still approaching visitors. Despite increased monitoring and hazing efforts by wildlife staff, the bear became progressively harder to discourage from staying near humans.

Photographs released by Grand Teton National Park depict visitors standing just feet from the bear near Delta Lake. Additional images show the bear inspecting unattended food and gear among rocks, trees, and logs. The park emphasized that visitors should never leave food unattended, even briefly. They also advised people to secure food and belongings immediately when a bear approaches. The carcass of the bear was flown out of the backcountry by wildlife personnel the morning after the euthanasia.

    Human Food Influences Bear Conduct

According to the National Park Service, food conditioning poses a significant wildlife management challenge because bears can learn to associate humans with food. Such learned behaviors increase the likelihood of bears approaching campsites, trails, picnic areas, and other visitor spots. The park stated that this bear’s repeated food rewards, close approaches, and resistance to hazing confirmed these concerns. After weighing available management strategies and the bear’s behavior, authorities decided that lethal removal was necessary.

While relocation remains a method for addressing bear conflicts, the park notes that it often doesn’t resolve the issue. Bears may return to their established territories or encounter other bears after being moved. Finding suitable areas with natural food sources and minimal human presence can also be challenging. In this particular case, wildlife managers concluded all other options had been exhausted, and the bear posed a clear safety threat. The park characterizes lethal removal as a final measure.

Park Urges Visitors to Follow Bear Safety Protocols

Grand Teton National Park continues to remind visitors that both black bears and grizzly bears remain active across the area. Current guidelines require staying at least 100 yards away from bears. Visitors in the backcountry should travel in groups, make noise, and carry bear spray. Proper storage of food and scented items when not in use is also mandatory. These rules aim to prevent bears from acquiring human food and developing behaviors that could threaten both people and wildlife.

The National Park Service reports that Grand Teton typically removes about one or two bears annually through lethal means after other management options have failed. Most of these are black bears. Removal occurs only when a bear presents a clear risk to human safety and other measures have been tried without success. The incident at Delta Lake has renewed focus on food storage and wildlife viewing rules in backcountry areas. Park officials continue to ask visitors to report bear sightings and maintain the required distances during encounters.
