US Markets Decline Following Federal Reserve Rate Hike to 3.75%-4.00%

    September 17, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – U.S. equities finished lower on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve announced a 25 basis point increase in interest rates. This adjustment pushed the federal funds target range up to 3.75% to 4.00%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 631.21 points, or 1.21%, ending at 51,461.90. The S&P 500 dropped 34.55 points, or 0.46%, closing at 7,551.81. The Nasdaq Composite fell 3.16 points to conclude at 25,978.42.

The rate hike was unanimously approved by all 12 Federal Reserve officials during their September meeting. It marked the first increase in interest rates since July 2023. Officials indicated that economic activity continued to expand at a solid rate, citing strong domestic spending, robust productivity growth, and vigorous capital investment. The central bank also noted that employment levels kept pace with the workforce while unemployment remained relatively steady.

Inflation remained a key focus during the September 15-16 gathering. The Federal Reserve stated that inflation stayed elevated and reaffirmed its 2% inflation target. This decision followed a period during which rates had been held steady after earlier reductions. Wednesday’s rate increase signaled a shift in monetary policy for the first time in over three years. As a result, U.S. stock markets moved downward by the close, and bond yields also increased.

Federal Reserve Publishes Updated Economic Outlooks

New projections released alongside the rate decision indicated a median 2026 federal funds rate estimate of 4.1%. This is higher than the 3.8% median forecast from June. The officials also projected a median rate of 4.1% for 2027 and 3.9% for 2028. These estimates reflect individual policymakers’ views on appropriate monetary policy but are not commitments or predetermined paths for future Federal Reserve actions.

The forecast for real U.S. gross domestic product growth in 2026 was raised to 2.3% from the previous 2.2%. Meanwhile, the median unemployment rate projection decreased to 4.1% from 4.3%. The policymakers’ outlook for headline personal consumption expenditures inflation for 2026 stood at 3.7%, with core PCE inflation, which excludes food and energy, estimated at 3.4%.

Bond Yields Climb as Equities Retreat

Treasury yields increased during Wednesday’s session amid a decline in major U.S. stock indices. The two-year Treasury yield approached 4.73%, while the 10-year benchmark yield edged toward roughly 5.00%. This rise followed the Federal Reserve’s quarter-point rate hike and the release of its updated economic outlook. The Russell 2000 index of smaller U.S. companies also slipped approximately 0.4%, closing at 2,858.81. Most stocks across key U.S. exchanges experienced declines, outnumbering advancers.

Despite the decline on Wednesday, the main U.S. indexes remain positive for 2026 through the close of trading. The S&P 500 has gained about 10.3% this year, while the Dow increased approximately 7.1%, and the Nasdaq has risen about 11.8%. The session underscored market sensitivity to interest rates, inflation, and Treasury yields, with future Federal Reserve decisions likely to be influenced by ongoing economic data at upcoming policy meetings.
