Nevada’s Hawk Fire Claims 47 Homes in Reno and Burns Over 15,000 Acres

    August 26, 2026

RENO, NEVADA / RankWire.AI / – The Hawk Fire near Reno has led to the destruction of 47 residences and one commercial structure, with firefighters achieving 85% containment late Tuesday. Since erupting on Saturday, the wildfire has scorched 15,067 acres as it moved swiftly through arid terrain northwest of the city. An additional eight homes suffered major damage in the latest assessment. Fortunately, there have been no fatalities, although seven individuals sustained injuries while responding to the blaze. The updated damage tally shows a significant increase from earlier reports. Meanwhile, firefighting teams maintained the fire’s overall footprint as containment efforts advanced.

Washoe County assessment teams completed an initial survey of neighborhoods impacted by the fire on Tuesday. Most of the destruction was concentrated west of U.S. Highway 395, with fewer properties damaged on the eastern side. Authorities confirmed that canine search units examined the affected zones and found no signs of victims. According to fire officials, the blaze covered approximately six miles during its first 24 hours. Its rapid progression prompted large-scale evacuations in communities north and northwest of Reno. Damage assessment crews continued documenting losses as residents received updates about affected properties.

On Tuesday, authorities permitted roughly 9,300 residents east of U.S. 395 to return home as conditions improved. About 5,000 people remained under evacuation orders during the afternoon briefing. Several neighborhoods transitioned from mandatory evacuation to lower alert levels as crews secured containment lines. Road access also improved after previous closures had disrupted travel through northern Reno. Returning residents faced utilities that were damaged, debris, and lingering hot spots near affected properties. Officials emphasized the importance of checking current evacuation status before entering restricted areas.

    Evacuations ease as containment increases

Firefighters kept the Hawk Fire at 15,067 acres while expanding containment around its edges. Late Tuesday, the number of personnel on the scene decreased to 586 as containment improved. Crews continued inspecting hot spots, reinforcing fire lines, and working in neighborhoods affected by the flames. The response effort initially involved hundreds of firefighters, engines, helicopters, and other resources from across the U.S., with additional personnel arriving from Australia and New Zealand. The focus remained on securing existing containment lines and reducing residual heat within the burned area.

The authorities have classified the Hawk Fire as human-caused, and investigations are ongoing to determine its origin. They have not yet disclosed whether the ignition was accidental or deliberate. The fire started Saturday near the Somersett area and quickly spread through dry vegetation. Strong winds during the first day propelled flames toward populated zones in northwest Reno. As conditions permitted, firefighters gained further control, strengthening containment lines around the perimeter. No additional details about the cause of the fire have been released.

    State agencies support firefighting efforts

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County over the weekend. This declaration authorized state agencies to assist local efforts through Nevada’s emergency management system. It also facilitated coordination for firefighting, public safety, and recovery initiatives in communities impacted by the Hawk Fire. State resources supported local teams as evacuation zones expanded and thousands of residents evacuated their homes. The emergency status is scheduled to remain in effect through August 29 unless sooner rescinded. Emergency operations also included support for local agencies managing evacuations, public information dissemination, and community aid.

During the fire’s progression, it damaged power infrastructure in the Reno area, including approximately 100 wooden utility poles. Utility crews worked to restore services as residents were permitted to return to their neighborhoods. Firefighters continued patrols, damage assessments, and safety inspections around the affected zones late Tuesday. Authorities also kept updating evacuation zones as restrictions shifted across the impacted areas. Confirmed damages include 47 homes destroyed, eight homes seriously damaged, and one commercial building lost. With containment at 85%, firefighting teams remain engaged in suppression and safety measures throughout the fire zone.
