MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will restrict free Gemini users to its Flash-Lite model starting October 9, 2026. This change impacts Gemini Apps used with personal Google accounts. Customers without a Google AI subscription will lose access to Flash and Pro once the new model rules are in effect. Google states that this update is part of a broader shift in how model availability is managed across its consumer AI initiatives. The company detailed the revised access framework in its Gemini Apps support documentation.

Subscribers of Google AI Plus will still be able to use Flash-Lite and Flash, but their access to Pro will be discontinued. Google has not announced a single public transition date for all AI Plus users. The company states that affected customers will receive an email explaining when the new access rules will take effect for their accounts. Meanwhile, AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will continue to have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. The exact timing for Plus account changes will depend on the notification sent by Google.
Google characterizes Flash-Lite as an optimized model designed for speed and routine tasks like summarization and brainstorming. Flash provides enhanced capabilities while maintaining a balance between speed and reasoning for both simple and complex requests. Pro remains Google’s most advanced Gemini model, suited for demanding tasks such as complex mathematics and coding. Additionally, Google states that Pro offers a deeper understanding across text, files, images, and videos. Response times for Pro might also be longer compared to other Gemini models.
Paid subscriptions retain wider Gemini features
Users with access to a Gemini model can select low, medium, or high effort levels. Google notes that choosing higher effort can enhance task completion and yield more detailed responses. These settings also increase the consumption of a user’s available usage quota. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will also get access to Deep Think, a feature aimed at maximum parallel reasoning for complex tasks. This option is exclusive to the two higher-tier subscriptions.
The restrictions beginning in October follow earlier adjustments made on May 17, 2026, to Gemini usage limits. Google shifted Gemini Apps to compute-based limits that reset every five hours until a weekly cap is reached. Usage calculations account for prompt complexity, features used, and conversation length. Paid users benefit from higher limits, but premium models and features tend to consume these limits more quickly. The earlier changes for users under 18 were implemented on July 24.
Subscription tiers influence Gemini usage caps
Google currently enforces standard usage limits for users without a Google AI plan. AI Plus offers twice the normal limits, while AI Pro increases these to four times the standard. For AI Ultra, limits are either five times or 20 times higher than those for AI Pro, depending on the subscription. Features like media generation, Deep Research, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think are among those that can significantly impact usage quotas. Google confirms that paying users receive higher limits than free users.
The October restrictions specifically target Gemini Apps on personal Google accounts. Separate arrangements remain for users with work or educational accounts. Customers can manage, upgrade, or cancel their Google AI plans via Gemini Apps and Google One. After the update, free personal accounts will only have access to Flash-Lite instead of Flash and Pro. Google also recommends keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as the new access rules take effect.
