US-based OpenAI Collaborates with Independent Math Experts on AI-Driven Mathematical Discoveries

    September 23, 2026

PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI has initiated a partnership with an autonomous group of mathematicians to evaluate and disseminate results generated by artificial intelligence in mathematics. Hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence is tasked with providing guidance on new findings, academic standards, and the integration of OpenAI tools in research and education. This group functions independently from OpenAI, and its members do not receive compensation from the company.

The independent advisory body can offer recommendations without prior request from OpenAI and is authorized to publish its insights. Additionally, it can publicly comment on the influence of OpenAI on the field of mathematics. The members have control over the group’s composition and may advise other AI entities whose models have a notable impact on mathematics. However, the group holds no decision-making power at OpenAI or any other AI organization. OpenAI has clarified that the group will not provide counsel on the pace of its internal mathematical research efforts.

The initial team comprises nine mathematicians: François Charles, Camillo De Lellis, Timothy Gowers, Martin Hairer, Nikhil Srivastava, Ulrike Tillmann, Ravi Vakil, Edward Witten, and Melanie Matchett Wood. Their affiliated institutions include the Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Berkeley, Cambridge, EPFL, and ENS-PSL. De Lellis and Witten serve as principal investigators for the Institute for Advanced Study project backing this initiative.

OpenAI reports swift advancements in mathematical exploration

OpenAI announced this advisory collaboration as it revealed breakthroughs related to an internal artificial intelligence system. The company noted that training of the model began on August 28. Since then, the system has reportedly solved over 100 longstanding open problems across a broad spectrum of mathematical disciplines. OpenAI characterizes these achievements as outcomes generated by its internal model. The advisory group’s immediate concern is how OpenAI should coordinate the publication of numerous significant results it has reported.

This announcement follows OpenAI’s September 8 release concerning work on the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the Millennium Prize Problems in mathematics. The company shared an analytical proof along with a formalization using the Lean proof system. OpenAI stated that its internal model produced the proof, demonstrating that a smooth fluid can develop a singularity within finite time. The company also clarified that it does not intend to claim the Millennium Prize for this achievement.

The independent group emphasizes standards for review and dissemination

The creation of the advisory group followed OpenAI’s approach to some of its members about establishing an external advisory board. Instead of that route, the mathematicians formed an independent entity, inviting additional experts to join. The group’s declared goal involves fostering dialogue between AI firms, the mathematical research community, and the broader mathematics field. Its focus includes promoting responsible methods for presenting and releasing mathematical discoveries. This effort is also part of broader discussions among mathematicians regarding how AI-produced research should be assessed, credited, and communicated.

Currently, the group’s work revolves around analyzing the mathematical results that OpenAI claims its internal model has generated. It is seeking feedback from mathematicians as it develops guidelines on how these findings should be disclosed. The group plans to publish its recommendations for AI companies on its website. Responses from mathematicians will remain confidential unless they choose to share them publicly. Ultimately, the final decisions lie with the companies receiving the advice, while the independent body acts as a conduit connecting mathematicians and the AI industry.
