US Treasury Yields Surpass 5% Amid Rising Borrowing Costs in the United States

    September 15, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield briefly moved above 5% on Monday, marking a level last seen in October 2023. Prior to that, it had not traded decisively above 5% since 2007. The yield later decreased, with the U.S. Treasury’s official daily curve showing 4.97% for September 14. This remains significantly higher than the 4.15% recorded at the start of 2026, highlighting the rapid escalation of long-term U.S. borrowing costs.

Rising energy prices and inflation have contributed to pressure on the bond market. Brent crude traded near $107 a barrel on Tuesday after approaching $110 during Monday’s session. According to federal data, U.S. consumer prices increased by 0.4% in August and were up 3.4% from a year earlier. The energy index rose 16.3% over the past 12 months, with gasoline prices climbing 27.4%, keeping fuel costs at the forefront of inflation concerns.

As markets focused on inflation and borrowing costs, the Federal Reserve kicked off a two-day policy meeting on Tuesday. The central bank’s target range was 3.5% to 3.75% before the meeting. Long-term yields can increase independently of the Fed’s policy rate because Treasury prices are set by investors in the market. The 10-year note acts as a key indicator for mortgages, corporate debt, and other long-term financing options.

Rising Borrowing Expenses Impact Housing and Financial Markets

The increase in Treasury yields has already affected the U.S. housing market. Freddie Mac reported that the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate climbed to 6.76% for the week ending September 10. This was the highest in over a year and marked a rise from 6.71% the previous week. A year earlier, the rate stood at 6.35%, indicating how higher bond-market borrowing costs have begun to influence home financing.

U.S. equities also declined Monday as rising yields, elevated oil prices, and losses in the technology sector put downward pressure on major indexes. The S&P 500 decreased by 0.48%, the Nasdaq Composite fell by 0.56%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 0.29%. Increased Treasury yields make government bonds more attractive, leading to heightened competition for investor capital across markets. Since bond prices and yields move inversely, the surge in yields reflects lower prices for U.S. government debt.

Global Bond Markets Keep Treasury Yields in the Spotlight

This pressure extends beyond the United States, with government bond yields in several major economies reaching multiyear or multidecade highs during 2026. Elevated yields raise the cost of financing for governments and corporations issuing new debt or refinancing existing obligations. As a central player in global finance, the U.S. Treasury market’s benchmark yields influence currency trading and credit pricing worldwide.

In Asian markets on Tuesday, the 5% Treasury yield level remained a focus after Monday’s intraday breach. Oil prices stayed high, and the U.S. dollar traded near a two-week high as investors monitored the Federal Reserve’s meeting. The latest official Treasury data still placed the 10-year yield below 5% at Monday’s close. Even after that pullback, the benchmark stayed close to its highest levels in nearly three years and continued to influence borrowing costs across the U.S. economy.
