Global assessment reveals climate and clean air initiatives yield $15 for every $1 invested

    September 9, 2026

NAIROBI, KENYA / RankWire.AI / – According to a new worldwide evaluation, coordinated efforts to tackle climate change and air pollution can produce approximately $15 in economic advantages for each dollar spent. This assessment was published on September 7 by the UN Environment Programme and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition. It reviews 25 different strategies targeting the main sources of emissions and pollution. The report characterizes this as the first exhaustive global economic analysis of combined climate and clean air actions.

Climate and clean air action delivers $15 for every $1 spent
Clean air and climate action can deliver major health, economic and emissions benefits.

The study projects that these measures could generate annual economic gains equivalent to 2.8% of the global GDP in 2035. This figure is expected to increase to 4.5% in 2050 and reach 11.4% by 2100 if fully implemented. Even excluding non-market welfare benefits, the measures are estimated to return around $4 for every $1 invested. The report also highlights that delaying implementation by just one year could result in losing more than $1.5 trillion in combined annual benefits.

The 25 strategies span sectors such as energy, fossil fuel systems, industry, transport, agriculture, residential energy, and waste management. These include transitioning to renewable energy, boosting energy efficiency, promoting cleaner cooking and heating methods, adopting electric vehicles, and enforcing stricter vehicle emissions standards. Additional measures target oil and gas leaks, routine venting and flaring, fertilizer application, livestock farming, rice cultivation, and crop residue burning. The package further encompasses improved waste handling and reductions in hydrofluorocarbons and other climate-altering pollutants.

    Major sectors benefit economically

Air pollution remains a key aspect of the economic analysis because of its impact on health and productivity. The assessment links human-caused outdoor air pollution to roughly 6.4 million premature deaths globally in 2025. Household air pollution contributed an estimated 2 million premature deaths, including approximately 300,000 children. Outdoor pollution also played a role in 5.5 million new cases of childhood asthma and 2 million new instances of dementia in the same year.

Full execution of these measures could prevent a total of 144 million premature deaths related to air pollution by 2050, including 96 million associated with ambient air pollution. The report also forecasts hundreds of millions fewer cases of chronic illness. Compared to the baseline, immediate action could halve global carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, reduce methane emissions by 60%, and cut several major air pollutants by approximately 70%.

Climate and health improvements are interconnected

The modeled package is projected to prevent about 0.34 degrees Celsius of global warming by 2050 and 1.4 degrees by 2100. By the end of the century, levels of major air pollutants could decrease by as much as 85% under the scenario outlined in the assessment. The cost of implementing these measures is estimated at roughly 0.7% of global GDP over the next decade, decreasing to about 0.5% by the end of the century. The evaluation also suggests that stronger enabling conditions could accelerate full implementation by as much as ten years.

Releasing the findings for the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies, the UN Environment Programme and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition emphasize that institutional barriers significantly hinder the wider adoption of existing measures. They estimate that addressing these enabling conditions could generate savings of up to $10 trillion by 2040. The results establish a link between climate policies, air quality, health costs, and productivity within a unified economic framework that encompasses readily available measures across key sectors.
