Pacific Islands to Benefit from Over $150 Million U.S. Support Campaign

    September 3, 2026

KOROR, PALAU / RankWire.AI / – The United States has unveiled a support package exceeding $150 million for countries across the Pacific Islands, covering sectors such as energy, infrastructure, digital connectivity, and maritime security. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced this initiative at the Pacific Islands Forum Partners Dialogue held in Palau. The package integrates planned financial aid, technical support, and feasibility studies aimed at several island economies. According to the State Department, these programs focus on enhancing energy stability, transportation links, communication systems, economic development, and law enforcement capabilities.

US support package directs more than $150 million toward Pacific Island programs.

A key element of this support is a $60 million Regional Energy Security Initiative targeting Pacific Island nations. The State Department mentioned its intention to allocate these funds while coordinating with Congress. The initiative aims to bolster fuel storage capacity and implement measures to improve the resilience of electricity grids. U.S. officials emphasized that this funding addresses the energy supply challenges faced by countries throughout the Pacific. This initiative constitutes a significant portion of the overall package announced during the regional gathering.

Tonga will benefit from dedicated support for a fuel infrastructure feasibility study led by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, or USTDA. Agency records indicate a grant of $1,420,872 awarded to Pacific Energy South West Pacific Limited for this project. The study will evaluate necessary port upgrades, pipelines, fuel storage facilities, and potential modifications to Tonga’s fuel pricing structure. Its goal is to raise the nation’s fuel storage capacity from roughly 15 days to around 60 days of supply.

The broader support plan also includes a major port upgrade for Penrhyn in the northern Cook Islands. The State Department, in partnership with Congress, plans to contribute $50 million, with New Zealand contributing NZ$17.5 million. Implementation will be led by New Zealand along with the Cook Islands and the United States. The project aims to enhance port safety, transport services, cargo handling, and connection capabilities to the remote atoll. The port upgrade initiative was announced alongside the overall Pacific support package during the Palau meeting.

USTDA also revealed plans for digital and transportation projects in Tonga, Palau, and the Marshall Islands. In Tonga, funding will support a feasibility study for modernizing the national data center and network. In the Marshall Islands, technical assistance will address the national mobile network, ports at Majuro and Ebeye, and Amata Kabua International Airport. Palau will receive support for a feasibility study related to relocating Belau National Hospital. These projects encompass communication, transportation, and public infrastructure improvements across multiple Pacific Island jurisdictions.

Regional security and technological initiatives expand U.S. engagement

A portion of the package is dedicated to maritime enforcement and law enforcement cooperation, with the State Department planning $17 million, pending congressional approval, to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. The initiative includes updates to legal frameworks, compliance training, and technological tools to monitor marine activity. Additionally, the United States and Palau will co-chair a new Pacific police ministers’ conference, focusing on maritime security, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and illicit financial flows.

Furthermore, the package features cloud technology projects for Pacific governments and support for seabed mapping and analysis. U.S. environmental officials are preparing a drinking water sampling initiative in Palau, which will include training for local operators and laboratory staff. All these efforts are part of the broader U.S. commitment of over $150 million, as announced by Christopher Landau. While some components await congressional approval, USTDA has already authorized or funded several feasibility studies and technical assistance initiatives across the Pacific Islands.
